The Crucifixion of Jesus
Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. [NIV. John 19: 16-18]
Meditation:
John 3:16 (NIV) says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus came to tell the world the love of Lord. Jesus was himself the incarnate love of God. It is the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. The crucifixion of Jesus on the cross, though unbearable to believers, was necessary. The cross speaks straight to the hearts of men. If Jesus had refused the cross, it would have meant that there was a limit to God’s love. When Jesus was lifted up from the earth, Jesus would draw all men to Him. God’s love to mankind is limitless. 1John 3:16-18 (NIV) says: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, teach us to love one another as You have loved us. Thank You for making Your dwelling among us through the birth of Jesus Christ. Thank You for atoning our sin through the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross. Thank You for giving us eternal life through Christ’s resurrection. As we seek to be Your disciples in this Season of Lent, help us in our understanding of Your ways, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
